How displaced people live in dormitories in Transcarpathia - stories of women from frontline Donetsk region

At the beginning of the war, many Ukrainians thought they were only leaving home for 2-3 weeks. But the war is now in its the third year now, and many people have nowhere to return to: their cities are destroyed, occupied by Russia, or constantly under fire. Therefore, people have to get used to life in a new reality, and we are trying to helping them to do so. When I work, I forget about bad thoughts, says Yulia from Lysychansk, Ukraine, who found safe shelter in a modular house built by Caritas Czech Republic in Mukachevo

Western Ukraine has become a safe place for people fleeing from Russian military aggression against Ukraine. Julia and her elderly mother arrived here in the spring of 2022 after their hometown Lysychansk was attacked by the Russian army. They cannot go back because the city is occupied. Thanks to Caritas Czech Republic, Yulia found safe accommodation and now works at local sewing factory.

We encountered many inspiring stories during our work. Stories of people who overcame obstacles and managed to stand on their own feet. Stories of people who have persevered during difficult times and motivate others to take life into their own hands. Now we would like you to meet them too.

I feel needed because I help local children and the refugee community, says Aliona about her new life in Moldova

The war in Ukraine has been going on for 15 long months. Neighboring Moldova has taken in more than 700,000 refugees since the war began and around 100,000 remain in the country. Among them is 41-year-old Aliona, who fled Ukraine with her family. Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova offered her a helping hand. Aliona started helping at the local rehabilitation center immediately after her arrival and is happy that her work is making a difference.
